“You’re everything I ever wanted.”
The words came uninvited as he watched her pick up her sundress from the floor, the sky in her hands. There was a pause in her movement as she processed his words but it ended when he said her name, voice quiet but questioning. She pulled on her dress impatiently, the speed of her actions opposing the easy way she rolled out of bed earlier.
“I – are you okay?” He asked, one arm already leaving the bed in an attempt to connect to her again. It dropped when he registered the slight shake in her hands as she shrugged on the straps of her sundress, sweeping black strands of hair out of her way.
“What?” The word was sharp, nothing like the good morning she kissed into his chest when they woke an hour ago.
“Nothing, I just thought…” He trailed off, trying to swallow past the anxiety slowly creeping up his chest. A finger crept out, unbidden, and stroked its way down her arm, hand falling into his lap after completing its journey, clenching the sheets still pooled around his waist. His eyes fell, focused on the creases and folds. Another swallow. “You’re tense.”
A chuckle dragged his eyes back up to her, a half-smile on her face. “Are you offering to fix that?”
She turned away before he could reply that there was nothing to be fixed, that she didn’t need to be fixed. The words were there at the tip of his tongue but he didn’t know how to bring them forward, how to breathe life into them.
She glanced at him, pausing in her search for the pair of flats she had arrived in, before saying, “I was just wondering how fucked up you must be if this is everything you ever wanted.”
“I’m not fucked up,” was his immediate response. His eyes softened and he hesitatingly lifted his arm out to her again. “You’re not fucked up.”
She took his hand in both of hers, cradling it to her chest. “I hate to be the bringer of bad news, angel, but I’m pretty sure we’re all a little fucked up.” She pressed a soft kiss to his lips, eyes closing for a brief second, before pulling back. “But hold on to that sweetness okay?”
